Links and Resources

MSDS [Material Safety and Data Sheet] -

Need one of these? We have thousands of them cluttering our office but we have found an online resource to obtain MSDS's quickly. This means we dont have to waste space, or hours of database entry storing them ourselves any longer.

Some helpful hints for MSDS searching:

- Do check the manufacturers web site. This is time consuming to do because some of the big guys have sites that need a guide and a spotter to navigate. The benefit is that you know 100% that they have what you need.... somewhere.
- Do use your favorite search engine. I use Clusty by Vivisimo because I find it gives the most relevant results from all the search engines at once. You may try them out for yourselves below, but be sure to

Search results will display in a new window.

You may also obtain MSDS's from the following sources:

msds search logomsds search logo This site indexes msds resources and displays them in your browser as text, ready to print if needed.

OHSAH - Occupational Health and Safety Agency For Healthcare in Brithish Columbia. While focused on materials that effect healthcare workers, the database is extensive and worth checking out.

GSA Heartland Region - Primarily focused on material used in the heartland region of the United States, this resource is fast and easy to search.

New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services Right To Know Program - Primarily for spec and fact sheets and not a full MSDS resource, but useful for a quick understanding of a specific substance.

Oxford University - They maintain a large database of the most common chemicals. Easily searched with quick results. These are best used for general information as manufacturers are not included with the information.

MSDS Provider - I don't like to use this one even though the results are the best and most comprehensive. They give manufacturer specific results, but because it is FREE and so popular, you can often make coffee, check your mail, gossip at the water cooler, and pick up your dry-cleaning before your search is complete.

CAS #'s, UN's and DOT Class

Go Here for Cas numbers and UN's The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. This links directly to an alphabetical listing fo chemicals providing cas numbers and UN's. The page takes a minute to load, so dial-up users beware. It is extremely helpful and offers links to safety cards for each chemical listed.

Chemfinder logo and link This is another great resource. They offer a professional ChemIndex service as well, but ChemFinder is free and offers a wealth of information very quickly, including DOT classes. Some of you who have been visiting our Inventory page for a while may have noticed that we have been linking to them for over 3 years now.

Weight and Mass Conversion

Link to onlineconversions
We have this link for you on the Inventory page as well, but they offer conversions of much more than just weights. Pretty much any unit of measure can be converted to about anything else you can imagine on this site. It is an incredibly useful resource.

Helpful free applications

To ease your workload and make the most out of the resources available to you on the web. The applications listed below are all free for personal use, and we only suggest those that will not add spyware/adware, or malware to your computer. Graphics and Picture Viewers:

There is nothing quite like the feeling of obtaining a document or picture of material condition that you are going to rely on, only to find your computer has nothing to view it with. It becomes even more frustrating when you factor in the number of different ways information can be presented. The following two applications are capable of viewing picture related documents in multiple formats, thus obviating the need to download and install 20 different applications for the same purpose.

Picasa 2.0 by Google: Picasa 2.0 Logo, Click To Go To Home Page In A New Window

This is a great organizational application. It can view a ton of different file types, and scan your computer for all images, maybe finding pictures you thought you lost!

Infranview:
Infranview Logo and Link Click the logo to go to the homepage for more information and download locations. This application may not be as good an organizer as Picasa, but it can view more formats and has free plug-ins available for even the most obscure file types. Please pay attention during installation. This will attempt to install 3rd party software (e-bay toolbar), but you can easily opt-out during the installation process. Just uncheck the boxes at the appropriate time. If you like the program, the author asks that you donate $12.00 to support his work. Considering its utility, that is a bargain!

Document Viewers and Editors:

Go To Foxit Site To Get The Free Reader By far, the most widespread document type that we come across is .PDF. This is an Adobe Acrobat document type, and luckily, they offer a free viewer available for download at the Adobe site. However, there is an alternative pdf viewer that starts up, and loads pages quicker. It's freeware called FoxIt Reader and can be had by clicking on their logo.

For everything else, including publishing in .pdf format, there is a great alternative to Microsofts' Office. It's called OpenOffice.org and it can do everything that Microsofts Office can, and more. Best of all, it's FREE for personal and business use and has a free online support community. The interface is very similar to what you have become accustomed to, so support open source software and give them a try. You won't be disappointed. Clicking the logo will bring you to the download page.

Browsers: There is a better way...

If you are still surfing the net with Internet Explorer, you are missing out. Actually, you are part of the vast majority of surfers still married to this overwieght, underfeatured, and flawed browser with enough security holes to drive a tanker through. It's past time you start searching for a replacement that doesnt need security upgrades every month.

Firefox is the most capable solution available for the web at any price, and its free, just like all the other helpful stuff listed here. It integrates a pop up blocker, and features multi-tabbed browsing. Once again, you won't be disappointed! Click the banner to go to the Download page. They also offer a safer and free alternative to Outlook. Click the Thunderbird logo when you're ready to have your inbox make sense.
